Psalm 23:1
23rd Psalms
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
David writes as someone who had kept sheep himself, so the picture is not sentimental. A shepherd feeds, defends and goes looking when one wanders off. To say the Lord is that shepherd is to say provision is somebody's responsibility other than your own.
Ephesians 4:32
Be Kind
“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Kindness here is not a personality trait, it is a command with a reason attached: forgive the way you have been forgiven. Paul places it directly after a list of the things that quietly corrode a community, which is where kindness actually costs something.
2 Timothy 1:7
Faith Over Fear
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
Paul writes to a young leader who had every reason to be intimidated. Fear is not denied, it is displaced, replaced by something with more authority behind it. Faith over fear is an order of priority, not a claim that fear never shows up.
Jeremiah 29:11
God's Plan
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
Spoken to a people already in exile, not to people about to be rescued from it. The promise is not that the hard season is cancelled, but that it is not the end of the story God is telling.
2 Corinthians 12:9
Grace Is Enough
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Paul asked three times for the thorn to be removed and got this answer instead. Sufficiency is the point: grace is not the consolation prize when strength runs out, it is the supply that outlasts it.
1 John 5:4
He Who Overcomes The World
“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith.”
John writes overcoming in the past tense. The victory is not something the believer manufactures under pressure, it is something already secured and then lived out of.
Acts 1:8
Holy Ghost
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses.”
The last thing Jesus tells his followers before he leaves is to wait. The power described here is not for private experience, it is given so ordinary people can testify to something they saw.
Psalm 5:12
Infinite Favour
“For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover him with favour as with a shield.”
Favour in the psalm is protective, not decorative. It surrounds like a shield rather than decorating like a medal, which is a very different thing to walk around in.
Revelation 19:16
Jesus Is King
“On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”
The claim is political before it is personal. Every other authority in the passage is relative to this one, which is why the phrase has never been safe to say casually.
Ephesians 2:8
Saved By Grace
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”
The sentence removes credit deliberately. Nothing in it is earned, which is either offensive or the best news you will hear, depending on the day.
Matthew 20:28
Son Of Man
“Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
The title Jesus used for himself most often is the humblest one available, and he defines it by service. Greatness in the kingdom runs in the opposite direction to greatness everywhere else.
1 Peter 5:2
Feed The Flock
“Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly.”
Peter, who was once told to feed the sheep, passes the charge on. Care of people is described as work you choose rather than work you resent.
Joshua 1:8
Wear The Word
“This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night.”
Scripture is meant to stay close enough to shape ordinary decisions. Our tagline comes out of this: wear the word, spread the word, keep it in view rather than in storage.
1 Thessalonians 5:17
Pray Without Ceasing
“Pray without ceasing.”
Paul's shortest instruction in the whole letter is three words long. It is not a call to spend every hour on your knees, but to keep the line open, to live with prayer running underneath ordinary work, travel, study and rest rather than reserved for a set moment in the day.
Romans 1:16
Unashamed
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.”
Paul writes this to believers in the capital of the empire, where the gospel had no social standing at all. To be unashamed is not bravado; it is refusing to edit your faith down to whatever the room finds acceptable.
